Air conditioning for retail

Shops have to stay comfortable for customers while contending with big glazed frontages, doors that open all day, and the heat from display lighting — and to do it without unsightly kit spoiling the space. Comfortable customers stay longer and spend more, so getting it right pays off.

What makes retail different

  • Solar gain — large shopfront glazing lets a lot of heat in.
  • Open doors — frequent entry means warm or cold air constantly coming in.
  • Display lighting — adds noticeable heat, especially feature lighting.
  • Variable footfall — the load swings with how busy the shop is.
  • Aesthetics — the system should be discreet and on-brand.
Keeping the look clean (and the doorway in check)

For a tidy finish, ceiling cassettes and ducted systems keep indoor units out of sight — just a grille on show. Many shops also fit air curtains over entrances: a downward jet of air across an open doorway that helps hold conditioned air in and outside air out, easing the load from constant door use.

Systems we’d recommend: VRF/VRV with cassettes for larger or multi-zone stores; packaged/rooftop units for single-storey, big-floor retail with roof access; multi-split for smaller shops.

Compliance: F-gas obligations and possible TM44 inspections apply to larger systems.
