Air conditioning for gyms
Gyms are a tough environment for air conditioning. Lots of people working hard generate a great deal of heat and moisture, and they need plenty of fresh air. Keeping a gym cool, dry and well-ventilated — without it feeling stuffy — takes more than a comfort system on its own.
What makes gyms different
- High heat output — exercising bodies generate a lot of heat.
- High humidity — sweat and heavy breathing add moisture that needs managing.
- High fresh-air demand — a busy gym needs plenty of ventilation to stay fresh.
- Large open spaces — and different zones (cardio floor, studios, changing rooms).
- Air quality and odour — closely tied to ventilation.
Cooling, humidity and fresh air together
A gym is a reminder that cooling, humidity control and fresh air are three different things. Air conditioning handles the heat and some of the moisture, but a packed gym also needs strong ventilation to bring in fresh air and carry away humidity and odour — see ventilation vs air conditioning. The two are designed together so the space stays cool, dry and fresh even at peak times.
Systems we’d recommend: packaged/rooftop units for single-storey gyms with roof access and large open floors; VRF/VRV with cassettes for multi-zone or multi-storey facilities — in all cases paired with proper ventilation.
Compliance: F-gas and possible TM44 inspections apply; with high occupant density, fresh-air rates matter — see ventilation vs air conditioning.
